Q: What is mama cloth?
A: Mama cloth is a cloth, reusable menstrual pad. They are similar to cloth diapers, except for moms to use during their monthly period. Most mama cloth consists of two layers – a waterproof out shell and an absorbent inner layer. Snaps help keep it in place.
There are a wide variety of styles, absorbency levels, and fabrics. I use a menstrual cup and mama cloth liners for very low flow days when I don’t want to deal with the cup.
Q: Will it stain over time?
A: They can, just like your underwear might. The ones I use have a bamboo/charcoal absorbent layer, which is dark so stains aren’t an issue.
A few ways to prevent stains: soak after use, use Oxyclean or a similar stain remover, and hydrogen peroxide, which helps remove blood from most fabrics.
Q: How do I wash cloth pads?
If you use cloth diapers, toss them in with your diaper load. Otherwise, do them in a separate load with towels or whatever else you are comfortable with washing together. To wash, I use Tide powder with an extra rinse cycle.
